A crazy day

I'm still catching up...but you're used to that, right?  Ok, so the first weekend of December Steven was working, and we had two events to cram into one morning.  The first was a Fun Run at Matt's school.  It was a fundraiser for the 5th graders, and Matt was thrilled at the chance to get to race.  He's acting all cool in this picture, it cracks me up.  The kid in yellow is his friend and racing rival, Trent.  These two are great friends, but Matt's chief complaint about Trent is that he beats him when they run laps on the track at school.  Not every time, but most times.  I love it when I pick up Matt from school and he says, "Hey Mom, want to hear the race report?"  Of course!  It goes something like this: "First lap, second; Second lap, second; Third lap, first; Fourth lap, second..."  And so who steals first place from Matt?  Trent.
Needless to say, Matt was hungry for first place.  Or at least to beat Trent.  But really, the surprise racer was Will.  I don't know why I was surprised, I mean, the boy loves to run.  The big kids all lined up for the race, and Will was right there with them.  I thought he'd tire out pretty quick and I'd be able to keep up with him.  I had Johnny in the jogging stroller and we were walking along keeping an eye on Will, but he just kept running and running and got out of my line of vision.  He ran without even looking back where I was.  He just followed the herd of strangers, happily running.  John and I started running to keep up with him.  He ran the entire lap around the school without stopping.  And Matt?   I had no idea where he was.  That race started and he took off.  I didn't see him until I crossed the finish line with the two little guys.
Once we caught up to him he already had an armload of snacks.  Not one but two bagels, a Clif bar, a banana and juice.  Did he beat Trent?  No.  He says he was the second 1st grader to cross the finish.
I love this one of Will.  He was so pleased to get to stand up there with Matt amongst all the big kids.
The race was done early enough for us to make it downtown to the Chuy's parade, so off we went.  We met the Reners down there.  I love how Henry is peeking around the volunteer.
It was another great parade.  I loved the cheerleading squads, of course.  Henry enjoyed the Star Wars characters, and my kids liked the floats and the bands.  We got in the car to come home finally, and Matt says to me, "What are we doing this afternoon?  And, what's for dinner?"  Are you kidding me.
